PROJECT «PASTORCITOS DE BELÉN»
The situation for children in Nicaragua
Nicaragua is, after Haiti, the second poorest country in Central America. Children are mainly the ones who suffer. Instead of going to school they are sent out to sell small items or to beg for money for the family. Adolescent girls as young as 14 often found themselves pregnant and having babies to which they cannot care for. Two nuns realised the sad situation these children were in and started a school project.
The Vision
The nuns would set up a kindergarten and a school to improve the situation of the children and their mothers. In addition, it would facilitate the mothers’ integration by creating and providing new jobs and a place for education. Their greatest vision would be that through the education and integration of the mothers the project could be self-supporting.
